Decoupage Bunnies

Spring is the perfect time to add colorful, personal touches to your home. If you enjoy crafting and weekend DIY projects, learning how to decoupage wood cutouts is an easy, budget-friendly way to elevate your seasonal decor.

In this step-by-step guide, we will transform plain wooden shapes into beautiful, vibrant decorations for Easter, spring, or even summer styling. Let’s gather our supplies and get crafting!

Essential Materials for Decoupling Wood Shapes

Before you start, gather these materials for your project:

  • Wood Cutout: You can find these at local craft stores or online. (For this project, I used these exact 6-Inch Easter Bunny Cutouts on Etsy).

  • Decorative Paper Napkins: Choose a high-quality napkin with a vibrant design.

  • Mod Podge or White Glue: Gloss or matte finish works great.

  • Craft Paint: Acrylic or chalk paint in white or a very light matte finish.

  • Paintbrushes or Foam Brushes

  • Parchment Paper

  • Household Iron (Or a Cricut Mini Easy Press)

  • Sandpaper (Fine grit)

  • Scissors

  • Hot Glue Gun & Extra Embellishments: (Optional) Ribbons, gems, twine, or dried flowers to finish your look.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Decoupage Wood Cutouts Without Wrinkles

We are using the iron-on decoupage method for this project. It is the absolute best way to get a perfectly smooth, bubble-free finish every single time!

Step 1: Prepare and Prime the Wood Cutout

Paint both sides of your wood cutout with white or light-colored paint. A light background is essential because napkin layers are transparent; a white base makes the napkin’s colors pop. Let the paint dry completely, then gently sand away any rough edges.

Step 2: Apply the Base Layer of Mod Podge

Brush a generous, even layer of Mod Podge or white glue onto the side of the wood cutout where you plan to place your design. Crucial tip: Let this glue layer dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Separate and Prep Your Napkin Layers

Select your decorative napkin. Most party napkins are 2-ply or 3-ply. Carefully separate the layers and discard the plain white bottom layers. You only want the very top, thin, patterned piece of tissue paper.

Step 4: The Iron-On Decoupage Trick

Place your patterned tissue napkin over the dried, glued side of the wood shape, letting it hang slightly over the edges. Cover the napkin entirely with a sheet of parchment paper. Press your iron (set to medium heat, no steam) firmly over the parchment paper for a few seconds. The heat reactivates the dried Mod Podge underneath, fusing the napkin smoothly to the wood without causing any wrinkles!

Step 5: Trim and Smooth the Edges

Use your scissors to trim away the bulk of the excess napkin hanging off the edges. To get a perfectly flush edge, take your fine-grit sandpaper and lightly stroke downward along the edges of the wood cutout. The friction will cleanly tear away the leftover paper.

Step 6: Seal Your Easter Craft

To protect your beautiful new design and lock it into place, brush a final, thin layer of Mod Podge or a clear acrylic sealant over the top of the napkin. Let it dry completely.

Step 7: Add Extra Embellishments (Optional)

If you want to add some extra dimension, use a hot glue gun to attach fun details like a ribbon bow, a twine hanger, mini gems, or small dried florals.
