Give Thanks Sign - My Lovi LC

We see beautiful wooden signs everywhere we go, from home decor boutiques to online shops. But why not make one exactly the way you want—and even save a little money in the process?

If you don’t own an expensive Cricut or Silhouette cutting machine, don’t worry! You can easily use your computer, tracing paper, and some paint to create custom wording on wood using the simple Pencil Tracing Method.

Here is exactly how to do it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Custom Wood Sign

1. Prep and Cut the Wood: Step 1.

Decide how large you would like your sign to be. Cut your wood to size, finish the edges with a decorative detail if desired, and sand the surface completely smooth. Wipe away any lingering sawdust with a clean cloth.

Pro Tip: Keep hanging hardware in mind! Really large, heavy signs require heavy-duty hanging hardware, so select your dimensions mindfully.

2. Apply Your Background Finish: Step 2.

Paint or stain the entire surface of your wood block to create your background. Make sure the layer is smooth and let it dry completely before moving on to the design.

3. Print Your Custom Wording: Step 3.

Using Microsoft Word or any preferred word processing software, type out your chosen phrase in a font style you love. When choosing a font for your first project, try to avoid overly intricate curls and swirls, as they can be challenging to paint. Print the design out on standard white paper.

4. Trace Your Design Template: Step 4.

Place a sheet of tracing paper directly over your printed phrase. Carefully trace the outer edges of the lettering onto the tracing paper.

5. Transfer the Lettering to the Wood: Step 5.

Position your traced design template exactly where you want it on your prepared wood surface. Slide a sheet of carbon graphite paper directly between the tracing paper and the painted wood. Trace over all of the words firmly with a fine stylus or pencil.

Color Tip: If your painted sign background is light, use dark graphite paper. If your background is painted a dark color, use light-colored graphite paper so the lines pop out.

6. Paint and Seal: Step 6.

Remove the papers to reveal your transferred outline. Carefully fill in the lines using a small, fine-tipped paintbrush or a paint marker. (Paint markers are a fantastic option because they offer incredible control and make tracing outline details incredibly simple!)

Once the lettering is dry, apply a second coat if needed. Seal your finished project with a clean layer of satin water-based varnish to protect it.

Choosing the Best Paint for Wood Signs

The type of background paint you select heavily impacts the final aesthetic and durability of your home decor. Here is a breakdown of the most common options:

1. Latex Paint

Interior-based latex paint (the standard kind found at any local home improvement store) is usually the absolute best choice for DIY wood signs. It is available in an endless array of mixable colors, is easy to apply evenly, offers incredible coverage, and cures to a hard, highly durable finish.

2. Chalk Paint

Chalk paint is a popular choice for crafters because it requires zero priming beforehand. It is specially formulated to be easily sanded down or distressed, though it can scuff easily if left unsealed. If you are aiming for a rustic, lived-in style, reach for chalk paint. If you want a crisp, classic look, stick with latex.

3. Acrylic Paint

Acrylic craft paints are inexpensive, highly accessible, and come in every color imaginable. If you are making a small sign and already have these small bottles on hand, they will get the job done. However, try to avoid acrylics for larger signs; the coverage isn’t quite as strong as latex unless you use multiple coats and finish it with a strong top coat of varnish.

Don’t Skip the Primer!

It is always a good practice to apply a solid coat of primer to raw wood before your main paint layers—even if your latex paint claims to have a built-in primer. This is especially true if your wood piece has dark knots or uneven grain spots, as wood knots can bleed through your paint over time. Use a roller or paintbrush, and keep a clean rag nearby to catch any drips along the edges.

Once your sealer is dry, simply install your hanging hardware, choose the perfect wall, and display your brand-new handmade art!
