If you love the warm, rustic look of primitive home decor, learning how to make grungy candles is a fantastic, budget-friendly weekend project. You don’t need to melt wax or handle dangerous heat for this method. Instead, we use a simple coating technique to transform plain store-bought pillar or taper candles into beautiful, textured, spiced accent pieces that look like they came straight from an artisan craft boutique.
Here is exactly how to do it.
Supplies Needed
-
Plain wax candles (taper or pillar candles in white, cream, or tan work best)
-
Mod Podge (matte finish is crucial for that rustic, non-shiny look)
-
Instant coffee grounds
-
Ground baking spices (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger)
-
Water
-
A disposable aluminum pan or baking sheet
-
A foam brush or paintbrush
-
A sealable jar and a plastic bag
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Mix Your Grungy Base
In a sealable glass jar, combine equal parts Mod Podge and water. Stir well, then gradually mix in your instant coffee grounds until the liquid reaches a deep, dark brown color.
Pro Tip: Keep the lid on tight! This mixture stays good for a long time, so you can save any leftovers for future crafting sessions.
Step 2: Prep Your Primitive Spice Blend
In a resealable plastic bag, mix together your chosen spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger work beautifully together and smell incredible. If you want an extra chunky, rustic texture, you can even hand-grind whole spices or throw in some dry, coarse coffee grounds. Shake the bag to blend them, then sprinkle a generous layer of the spices across the bottom of your disposable aluminum pan.
Step 3: Coat and Roll
Using your foam brush, paint the coffee-infused Mod Podge mixture onto a section of your candle. Immediately roll the wet section of the candle directly into the spice blend in your pan. Continue painting the mixture onto the rest of the candle and rolling it until the entire wax surface is completely covered in a rich, textured layer of spices.
Step 4: Dry and Set
Place the candle aside on a protected surface and let it dry completely for about 30 to 60 minutes. Once it is dry to the touch, gently tap the candle against the side of a trash bin to shake loose any excess, unbonded spices.
Step 5: Seal the Finish
To prevent the spices from flaking off over time, you need to seal it. You can either paint on a final, thin topcoat of your clear Mod Podge mixture, or step outside and give the entire candle a quick, even spray with a matte finish sealer.
